Jerome, Arizona Located high on top of Cleopatra Hill (5,200 feet) between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona. Once known as the wickedest town in the west, Jerome was a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents to a roaring mining community. Four disastrous fires destroyed large sections of the town during its early history, resulting in the incorporation of the City of Jerome in 1899.

The Gold King Mine and Ghost Town is a private attraction, owned by the bewhiskered Don Robertson, and is hard to describe. Yes, there is an abandoned mine. Yes, there are abandoned buildings but strewn throughout the property is fascinating "junk." Classic trucks, tools, machines and so much more will keep you fascinated as you tour the property.

Yes, there are abandoned buildings but strewn throughout the property is fascinating "junk." Classic trucks, tools, machines and so much more will keep you fascinated as you tour the property. More History: The town of Haynes, Arizona, was once a suburb of Jerome. After finding some copper around 1890 on the hills in the area, a mining company decided to dig a deep mine shaft to dig it out. Oddly enough, copper was never found there. The miners dug down 1200 feet and never did find any copper - just gold. Not being too disappointed, they quickly began digging for this very precious metal. This mine became known as the Gold King Mine. For many years, many tons of gold had come from this mine - and other metals from other mines nearby. Altogether, more than one billion dollars worth of metals came from these mines. After a while, around 1
